Hi all,
I am into 60s/70s racing bikes, so when I stumbled over a Bob Jackson tandem on Craigslist, 15 minutes from my house, I made the fatal error of checking it out. One thing led to another and now I own this sweet, largely unmolested piece of art.

My wife is happy to see it & we enjoyed the first jaunt this morning, but it is clear to me that, as total tandem beginners, we could use some guidance. First, are there any good books or articles about tandem riding? Second, can Phil Wood brakes be made effective, or are there any substitutes? Finally, how does this tandem compare with other ones, in terms of stability, ride quality & responsiveness? Riding it solo felt awfully good. With my wife aboard we were working against each other to balance it sometimes, but when we were in sync it felt fine. We are both experienced riders in our 50s, by the way. Any wisdom you care to offer that would help us up the learning curve will be gratefully received!
