My driving instructor noted this behavior, and cited fear as the reason for it. What happens when you nearly bump into someone at the grocery store? Likely nothing more than an "excuse me". Near-misses when driving usually result in much more passionate responses, likely due to the fact that there is fear involved.

It makes sense to me, and is a good explanation for it. Maybe there's more involved also, but I think that's probably at least partially it.
