Maybe, but what other circumstance is this sort of reaction an acknowledged possibility? Like do you ever hear of someone getting cut off at the grocery store and taking off after the guy and running him down with a shopping cart? It's like being wrapped in 2 tons of steel make us forget that other drivers/riders are people too.
Also, do the drivers in these "run-off-the-road" cases ever get charged with attempted murder?

My driving instructor noted this behavior, and cited fear as the reason for it. What happens when you nearly bump into someone at the grocery store? Likely nothing more than an "excuse me". Near-misses when driving usually result in much more passionate responses, likely due to the fact that there is fear involved.
It makes sense to me, and is a good explanation for it. Maybe there's more involved also, but I think that's probably at least partially it.
