I would have used my mirror to keep a check for turn signal. If I saw one, I would actually have slowed or even stopped just as a matter of country road courtesy. In a more urban area I would just be alert to for the right hook.

On a rural road without a turn signal I just would have gone to full alert, been startled by the shriek of brakes, and ignored the rude motorist behavior.

I have never in many miles of riding seen the suggested behavior of moving out into the lane for side street intersections on a high speed rural road with adequate shoulder. That is not safe cyclist behavior.
