Stand back from the intersection and advance when you can see what vehicles are doing clearly.
You have a 190 degree field of vision nominally (without ocular disease)--sweep left and right by turning your head to pick out traffic and other hazards FREQUENTLY. Mirrors are not the complete answer as while they are very helpful they aren't at 1:1 for judging distance (much like the passenger mirror in a car that states Objects May Be Closer Than They Appear).
Those who cite a car as being a two-ton COCOON tend to qualify your safety equipment in a similar manner.
