However, at no point did the cyclist have any indication that the driver was doing anything but going straight.
To be fair, I didn't notice a turn signal, but that's not saying for sure there wasn't one. The sun was low and bright, and I was wearing a helmet, so the wind noise meant that I didn't realize there was a car there until it was fairly close behind me, and although I glanced back, it was not long enough to register much more detail than "Car!".
A mirror and/or improved road awareness could have averted this situation before it even happened.
Even if there was no turn signal, if I had of noticed the car earlier I would have had time to think "hey, this guy might be turning".
