Bikes/frames don't wear out, the cost of a tires,chain & cassette are minor why some secondary bike?
In Souther California, we can ride year round but it's nice to have two bikes in case one is broken. For example, I have to ride to work tomorrow but the rear tire on my road bike has a big cut on it and I'm too lazy to change it tonight. So I'll ride the Cross Check.
