You have a mirror. You have ears. You have look backs. Use these to keep youself aware of all traffic around you at all times. Before you crest a hill you should already KNOW who is behind you and how far back they are. If you are ever surprised by a vehicles presence, you have failed to keep proper tabs on the situation.

Even if there was no turn signal, if I had of noticed the car earlier I would have had time to think "hey, this guy might be turning".

You know what? With sparse traffic and few intersections, I'd say this is a viable option because it would not hinder your travel much, if at all. Happy riding!
