Do what I did. Get on the bike, ride until you get lost, then find your way home. Eventually, you'll know the area like the back of your hand. I used to just turn whenever I saw a street that looked nice/pretty/interesting, and keep going in that vein for a while. It's actually kind of fun exploring a new area that way. If you've got a GPS/smartphone, if you *really* get lost you can always consult it to get back on track.
