it's pretty hard to beat the combo of google maps/satellite views/street view. zoom out far enough to find interesting looking roads an appropriate distance from your starting point. street view them to make sure they're as nice as they appear. work backwards towards your starting point to assemble a route. if you're out in the countryside, double-check with the satellite view to make sure your route is paved the whole way, etc. run the route through some sort of toaster app (my favorite is the one discussed in
this thread) and download into your gps or print a cue sheet. the 21st century has its advantages.
