The point being, you need to expect potential right hooks from overtaking traffic even more when riding the shoulder than if you were out in the lane and obviously 'in their way'....but this is pretty basic stuff, no?
When motor vehicle traffic is flying past you at well over 50MPH your speed, you are being treated as a pedestrian no matter where you are on the road... be it on the shoulder, in the middle of the right lane or anywhere else on the roadway for that matter. As a matter of fact, you are about as close to being a "sign post" as a human can be.

This is the issue that some need to get over... when the speed differential is high, you are NOT part of traffic... you are merely an obstacle to be avoided.
