The big chainwheel is a 50. A 52 will work better, I think. I haven't counted the cluster gear teeth, but the smallest is below 14, possibly 12. 6 speed, by the way. The brakes are really fine now. We took it down a moderately steep hill with a stop sign at the bottom. I had no problems scrubbing off speed & coming to a full stop. Laden, it would be a different matter. As it is, the bike, my wife and I together don't weigh more than 320 pounds (thank you, Reynolds; thank you, Mr. Jackson!) so until we tour or go antiquing on the thing the brakes should be good.

How did you tame your wife? (This may need another thread...)
