in your vain effort to 'be right', i can see you don't take the time to read other posts. i said right hooks are infrequent ON THE OPEN ROAD, far less so than in urban or suburban settings. i didn't say NEVER.
in the end, we (cyclists) are responsible for our actions and our own safety as much as is within our control. in my opinion, that means riding as far from vehicular traffic as is safely possible. and that means taking a shoulder if it's there (and is in safe condition free of hazards). the danger in riding out in the lane in an effort to make yourself more visible far outweighs the (percieved) benefit of the action.
