I used to ride that between classes... on the commuter (slick-tired, drop-bar mtb), with panniers. Great climb though.
We rode MTBs up from campus a bunch of times too, to hit that trail up on top. Can't remember the name now, but a really fun loop up there....
I remember I overcooked one of the road switchbacks one time and got closer to an oncoming car than I care to repeat

A lot of my rides come out in the SST range when looking at NP. Most of my lunch rides are in the 45-70 minute range. My commutes also end up SST most of the time (by design). The STUCI and ZCI™ interval workouts end up being SST. Hill repeats too, really, if I don't hit them too hard.
For base though, I just ride right on the halfway point between endurance and tempo. Even if I've only got 45 minutes.
