About the knife by the thigh thing. I teach in a rough high school, and when I took a knife off a student (moments before the dismissal bell rang for xmas break and the hallways filled with 2500 people), I held it against my thigh to protect anyone who might accidentally bump into me while I brought the kid to security. I see it as a rather non-threatening place to hold a knife.
