Since the cell phone is so popular, public phones are few and far between these days. With so many people being paranoid, you can't count on the ability to knock on someone's front door and even get a response, much less having someone let you use their telephone if you have an emergency.

Plus, I can take pictures and post online status updates during my long rides, whether they are group or solo rides.
