Any reason I can't run a hybrid fork on my cross bike?

I just got a frame (2007 Felt F1x that was stripped and abandoned after the fork recall and never ridden) for nearly nothing and I want to build it up. I posted in the Trade thread for some parts, but have a question about the fork.

In looking around, I've seen some hybrid forks that appear to have what I'm looking for. Only problem I see is the ugly unicrown fork most have.

Do you think something like this would hold up to the abuse? I haven't raced yet, but I plan to. And I ride a lot of fire roads and some singletrack with my other cross bike so this one will be abused.

My other (and admittedly probably better) option is to get a Surly Cross Check fork but cash is tight right now as I'm still in college so I would like to keep it under $50.
