As far as the 6-sp, I just see no logic that it came with a 6-sp drivetrain. Few of them were even around when that bike came out.
My guess is it came with 7-sp 600 tricolor, as did the 200SC I rebuilt for another rider. I can't see the fork coming out in the 6-sp era, either. A lot of those frames were sold without groups, so my guess is that whatever was originally was on it came off at some point and what you got was cobbled together.
You can expand the chain stays from 126 to 130. I did so on the 200SC, no problem, moving it from 7-sp GripShift and wheelset to an 8/9/10 Alex wheelset with full 105SC group. I had to put a washer inside the R stay to clear the outer cog, which probably pushed it to 131mm, eh? I didn't redish, just adjusted the rear caliper and it works fine.
My Kestrel 200SCi came with 2x7 DT shifters and 7-sp wheelset, and it's running 2x9 Ulegra just fine. The RD hangar was reamed out, and was not replaceable, so it's running a 5mm Dropout Saver in it, which required two washers so the chain on outer 11t cog would clear it. It's got to be a bit wider than 131mm. I did redish the wheelset.
Ditto on checking the BB area for cuts and stuff. Those wide, thin flat washers are highly recommended there. I can't use an external BB on the 200SCi, and without that protective washer, a fully tightened BB really made me cringe.
Do not yank out that R shifter cable until you can figure out a way to route a new one, if needed.
Major, Major PITA.
Put modern wheels and group on that thing, and it's an amazing ride. Is that a 54cm?
Kestrel 200 sc spec was not 126 but 128.5 and do not move those stays more than 3 mm
