This is my first time riding with carbon stem/bars and I can definately say on the lightly bumpy roads it really does smooth out the ride even more. I asked the guys at the LBS if they get a lot of people coming in with these generic bars to do installs and they said that they do not. He gave them a good look over and didn't see any reason to think that they wouldn't be perfectly good bars. I feel like they may be a touch more flexy than my old aluminum but certainly they are plenty stiff.

Because of my torn ACL in my left knee I almost never get up out of the saddle when I ride so there aren't many times where I'll even be putting a ton of stress on the bars anyways so i feel pretty good about them. Wrapping the bars was a pain because 1. the extra width on the tops means you run out of tape and 2. I absolutely SUCK at wrapping bars. I wasn't really sure how far to wrap them and how much carbon to leave showing. They don't have internal cable routing, just a channel on the bottom but the cables do fit nicely into those channels and provide a clean look. The op gave me $10 discount since they were both basically brand new in fact, I met him at the post office where he picked up the stem so it was brand new so my total investment on this $105. the stem is 25 grams lighter than my old one and the bars are 60 grams lighter than my aluminum. Not a huge savings but a savings nonetheless.
i'm glad to hear they're working out. I'm about 175lb, which may be the reason why i didn't feel any flex at all.

In the end, i hope this experiment yields positive results. My theory is that we have been artificially conditioned to believe that Carbon Anything should cost $Much.More as opposed to their alloy counterparts. The irony is that this feeling is based on the inconsistent belief that carbon fiber is magically light and strong EXCEPT for the fact that it is also dangerous and brittle. I think this sits with us because we, culturally, have a lot of experience with metal but little with carbon fiber. Carbon Fiber technology has been around for quite some time, and although it was initially expensive because production methods were new and R&D had to be recouped, there's really no reason why it has to be so expensive now.

If the cheap stuff works, then more people will buy it, which will cause a market correction, and we will all benefit.

and then we can start freaking out over the Boron Fiber that Lew uses in their wheels.
