I work on a lot of stuff myself because my LBS is too expensive. I don't blame them for being expensive, the average household income in my zip code is something like $140,000!!!! I think if you do any amount of serious riding you need to know how to work on your bike. Issues happen and if you can't adjust a deraileur or change a tire and have an issue on the road you are screwed. I buy a lot of stuff online, I got a $200 crank for $35. Why should I get that from my lbs? but lord knows i've bought a ton of $7 tubes from them. I could get 2 for that price online.
