I learned the hard way that gloves are more than comfort, I took a nasty spill (10 stitches to my elbow which had multiple flaps of skin dangling) because it was a way humid day and I think one hand slipped off the bars, I probably inadvertently pulled back a bit on the other just enough to make the bike and me go down.

As for the helmet, I did NOT have any great impact on my head... but it did hit the pavement for a split second.
