There would be much more value in leading lives that helped ourselves reduce our personal car dependence and in demonstrating our capability to others (and encouraging them to join us).
I agree with you: in terms of behaviour, it's actually rather pointless to define car-free, since people will do what they do, regardless of definitions. But it's still kind of interesting to see whar people think about what they do, especially if they're trying to go without cars in a car-dependent culture.
