the only problem with mounting it on the chinring side is that if the chain coems off it hits the magnet. I extended the length of my magnet by adding a rare earth magent http://www.wondermagnet.com/main.shtml
I had to add them to one of my wheels has the magnet was so far away fro mthe sensor.
