It's actually not bad at all. The pedals are big enough that a lot of the shoe's area pushes down on them, and the cleat holds the shoe flush, so it feels pretty solid on the upstroke, too. People are right, that the stiff shoes don't flex at all, so they stay flat against the fred pedals.
What I hate is the float in the system.
