I had a carbon post on my old Giant TCR2, a bladed one, but am currently using a Thomson on my steel Gunnar. I can't really compare the two since the bikes are completely different, but I never thought the ride of the al TCR2 was too harsh--could have been the seatpost?? On the other hand, the ride is even smoother on the Gunnar (which can be attributed to the steel frame).
