I found that the transition took a lot longer when the lens was cold; and the colder the temperature, the longer the transition. It wasn't that big of a deal going from clear to tinted, but it really sucked when the sun would go down and I was stuck with dark lenses. As I recall it was really bad when the temp was below 15F, taking upwards of 20 minutes to de-tint.
