I recently purchased a Lynskey R230 outfitted with a Chris King headset. I was told that this headset manufacturer specs a spacer on top of the stem. I believe the spacer supplies added rigidity to the whole assembly. You might want to take a look at CK headset assembly instructions for a more accurate version.
