ok, I can actually take this question too seriously, if I stopped to think about it.

if only a single light, I'd go horizontal, since that implies width, and you don't want anyone to underestimate your width.

if there are multiple lights to play around with, I'd probably start "outlining" the shape of the bike and myself: verts on the stays, horiz on the saddle bag, round on the helmet, etc.
