I bought a Jamis Coda this year. It's a road bike with flat bars. Added fenders and a basic rack for a total cost of $600. Has a little more pep than the commuters I tested. The tires are smaller but shouldn't be a problem for paths. I've banged through some potholes and rough roads w/o problems. I outweigh you so that's alright, too. Just make sure the seat is clamped tight or you'll get that sinking feeling.
