My dad used to be like this, picking up stuff, but in his case, it developed into a hoarding OCD, and he won't do anything to help himself. It's a very serious condition that has affected him and our family more than I'd ever thought it could. The garbage truck actually stopped at his house to give him broken crap he thinks he needs or might find some use for.

I too pick up stuff from the streets. A few years ago, I actually furnished my apartment out of found in the street stuff. (Pallets and fruit crates are great for this).

But these days I try to be more selective, and unless I find a real use for it pretty soon, I end up giving it away again.
And of course I never find tools, or wallets or money, or really valuable stuff worth keeping.

I do a clean-up at least twice a year. Whatever is gathering dust, must go. It's a soul cleansing process
