Absolutely not true. In some applications it's actually better to switch brands around. SRAM's top of the line 1090R chain is a good example - it sucks and most riders use Shimano or KMC.

That said, speeds don't cross over well- ie: using a 9speed chain on an 8 speed bike, and Campy is in about a world of it's own
