The problem is that suffering is a perceived experience, and how people perceive pain or discomfort will distribute on a bell curve like everything else. One guy's death march is another guy's workout.
I'm sure the act of training at the level of a pro also conditions your stimuli response; what used to be an 11 is now a bearable 9, and so on.
On Devil Mountain Double we climbed Sierra Rd at mile 155 in the heat. I thought that was my ceiling for suffering until EC showed me an entirely new world of hurt. Hopefully the amount of discomfort I did endure at EC makes other stuff just a little bit easier, mentally.
