Weight isn't the reason I'd buy the stuff.
I've heard double wrapping handlebars with cork tape works pretty well too.
LOL.....just to give you an idea how "cushy" my steel bike is I can ride for hours on end with no handlebar tape if I want to. In fact, when I was constantly noodling with my brifter position I was riding "unwrapped" so I could make adjustments in on the road with my 5mm allen wrench.
