I don't think lack of lube explains it, either. I've ridden Dura Ace chains/cassettes without lubing them for over 2,000 miles -- the chain became a little noisier, but no wear issues.

Again, I've got 5,200 tough miles on my 7900 cassette and, by the looks of it, I wouldn't be surprised to get another 5,000 out of it. I don't wipe down my chain after any ride. I lube my chain infrequently, -- generally, if it becomes audible.

Something doesn't compute with a 2,000-mile Dura Ace cassette. (Could it have been a counterfeit? Was it bought online?)
