If questioned, he should reply that he wore interview cloths, not work clothes. The one thing to know is if a suit is interviewing, or a worker. Suit doesn't want to see a slob, worker doesn't want to see a suit.
If I wore Dockers and a polo shirt is about as casual as I would get for any interview. Most I"ve done (well all) have been either in a suit or sports jacket and tie, but that is me.
