There's possibly some of that too. 5 or so years ago he decided he needed to do it before he turned 40. (He's 38) But he's definitely been wanting to do it from a young age.
Part of that possibly also has to do with having the time/money to dedicate to it. the 35-40 age group supposedly is the most competitive. I'm not surprised, at least for the age groupers.
