For a "first" bike, picking the "right" bike shop is about twenty times more important than the brand or model of bike. Make a list of every bike shop within five miles or so of your home. Spend an hour or two in each of the shops. Figure out which of the shops is going to give you the most personal attention. Which ones really care about you, versus shops that are just into hearing the cash register ringing.
After you figure out which shop has the best "vibes", let them guide you to the best bike for your needs and your budget. The bike that is best for you is NOT the bike that is best for your neighbor, or your brother. And, a good LBS understands that, and takes the time to make sure you get the right bike, and the right "fit".
A good LBS carefully assembles and tunes the bike before you leave the store. And, they insist that you return in a few weeks for a "free" tuneup, after you have put some miles on the bike.
Do NOT buy at any shop that pushes the fact "we have the lowest price". Having the "lowest price" means turning over lots of bikes, rapidly. That sort of shop is not willing to take the time necessary to really take care of you. The "best" shop may sell a given bike for $50 or $75 more than a discount shop. And, that will be the best $75 you ever spend in your cycling career.
