Probably the biggest advancement in cycling in the past 20 years is integrated brakes and shifters (brifters). Once I tried them, there was no way I was going back to down tube shifters. It is great to be able to shift gears without taking your hands off the hoods.

As others have said, look at Specialized. They give you a lot for the money.
