I ran into that problem when setting up a bike! While short cage is great and all, I have found that I prefer medium cage mountain derailleurs. The trick is to make sure they are Top Normal (meaning when the cable goes slack, they shift via spring tension to the smallest cog) and have a barrel adjuster! There are a couple of Shimano LX's that I've found that work just great.
