Noise with new 8 speed on only 2 gears

Hi guys, have a question.

Just finished building a new wheel set for the old Trek 720 commuter with Hope ProII hubs. Changed from the old 7 speed to a new 8 speed (Sram) cassette and changed both shifters to new Shimano clicker shifters. Front is 3 speed Deore Crankset and rings, nothing changed here except changing the old 3 speed shifter for the new shifter so that the shifters match.

Not having any problems with shifting at all but but have an aggravating noise in 5th and 6th gear (the smaller cogs on the back). Sounds like the chain is not centered on the cogs but adjusting the shifter cable while riding does not get rid of the noise in these 2 gears. This is most noticed when in the middle chainring on the front.

Checked the chain, it's about a year old and well maintained, it's about 1/16" long over 10 links, slightly worn but not terrible.

Would replacing the chain possibly be a likely solution, just can't figure why I have the noise with everything shifting so nicely.

Thanks in advance !
