Rebuilding SRAM Force shifter - do or die?

My 2010 SRAM Force rear shifter went kaput today after just 400 miles. It seems as though the gear mechanism broke and it no longer ratchets. I bought if off eBay and although it was brand new, I am anticipating that any attempt at a warranty claim will be very painful. SRAM says claims must be made through the original retailer, and my experience with most LBS, much less online retailers, is that once they make their money, following through on your warranty claim is the very least of their priorities.

So that brings me to my question: Is it wise to rebuild one of these things at home? I noticed that rebuild kits are available, albeit not very easy to find. I'm good mechanically, but I'm no watchmaker, so I'm wondering if this is a job left to the professional. Any wisdom is appreciated.
