I would say in general, though, that any ride that takes 3 days to recover from sounds like it's overdoing it. I am no expert on training, but I think doing more miles and doing more interval training would help make these hammerfests easier on you.

One of my own training goals is to never wake up the morning after a ride feeling like I hate my bike.
Actually, the day after (Sunday am) I have the cycling high still, so I do an easy recovery ride. It's Monday or Tuesday before it hits me.
