I am wondering about the premise of your original question. If you can ride long distances at 28 to 30 mph, and you only do minimal cycling outside of these group rides, either you are doing a lot of other conditioning or you are a gifted natural athlete. Therefore I am wondering why you are having trouble recovering if you can ride this hard and this fast in the first place.

The only other person I can think of who could do this is The Weak Link, but he's from another planet.
My best average was 22mph over 60 miles with rolling hills, but that was back in 2007 when I weighed 15lbs less and was riding 120-150 miles per week.

This ride up here when I have been riding with them just has certain stretches of this 28 to 30mph stuff. These stretches are maybe 4-5 miles long. I skip the early loops where they are really fired up and joined the group around 9am for the run out to Va Beach (proper)
