Doing 100 miles a month I'm not sure interval training is the right thing to do. Sounds like you have quite a bit of base to build. I would focus on that before focusing on speed. Their are biological reasons, but also, if you're only riding 150 miles a month you don't want to ruin those 150 miles with interval training .
Ok, not to hijack here, but what is "building a base"? I've heard the term several times (including above) and I can only think it means building leg strength on the bike... I unfortunately re-discovered cycling a little late in the season, so I'm spending time on my trainer. I've noticed my HR isn't through the roof, but my legs are like lead after 40-50 minutes of various length intervals. I suspect if I keep it up (and find more interesting things on tv) my leg strength will catch up with my cardio.... is that building a base? Should I be focusing more on a "steady state" type of ride routine rather than intervals to get stronger?
