Hello Brian, welcome to Bike Forums.

Regarding punctures, outer tyre choice is crucial. I've been using Schwalbe Marathon tyres myself, they have very good puncture protection. Other brands have similar stronger designs. They're heavy, and primarily designed for touring/commuting use. In my use (utility cycling, commuting, touring), the weight penalty is not too bad compared to having to change/fix flat tubes every now and then.
