You should not feel bad or ashamed.
I have broken spokes but was fortunate to finish the ride. The last broken spoke occurred on a new wheel with 24 spokes. I expected the wheel to fail, but I made the 16 mi return without problems. I wasn't worried about destroying the wheel because I would have requested a new one from the warranty.
