Just a guess, but with the dollar so weak, I'm thinking that you'll end up spending more on a European bike in Europe, even without the tax. Seems like you would also have more flexibility and time to do it at home and then take the bike with you.
if i buy a bike here, i'l just rent a race bike there to tackle madone with, it'll probably be cheaper than flying with the bike. exchange rate aside, i was looking at some UK bike sites, and campy stuff just seemed cheaper, when converted to $
