My Long Haul Trucker has 37's and fenders with plenty of clearance. I'm sure 40' would be no problem. For commuting, fat tires are awesome. I laugh at pot holes and "wheel trap" drain grates. It's a heavy bike, but I use it over my lighter bike with 25's for everything but fast recreational riding with groups. The speed difference really doesn't amount to much.
