I extend my patching routine slightly to avoid this problem....
On bike: remove tube install known good tube, when I get home toss the dead tube on a nail with some others.
Later On when I have enough I do this:
1) put air in tube, dunk in bucket of water to find hole, mark hole.
2) scuff tube making sure if the hole is at a seam that the seam is fat
3) put on a larger then required area of glue.
4) wait for glue to become tacky
5) place patch on tube
6) make sure patch is in full contact.
7) place patch under a weight (rock) for 24 hours,
8) dunk in bucket of water to ensure patch is air tight.
9) remove all air from tube and roll into a round shape with the patch on the inside,
10) add to spares pile.
