The basic design of chain tools changed with the advent of buldging side plates. Chains with completely flat side plates dont work so well with modern chain tools.

The first pic shows a raised center area that leads to uneven supporting as mentioned by Chombi while the second pic has no raised area and better supports flat side plat chains:
