In general light returns the most information to the eye when it strikes an object uniformly. You comment isn't applicable for lighting an area in the best possible manner. However, for studying pavement characteristics, perhaps low is good.
Looks like we have another subject for DISPUTE! Like saddles, tires, bearings, etc., everyone has their own opinion about what is best. I agree with R.C., but I would NOT expect everyone else to also agree. That is why we have this type of 'discussion'.
It would help if we could keep the discussion on the point the OP presents though, and not let it deteriorate into an "I'm right and you're wrong!" type of debate.
What works for me may NOT work for you, but you have to decide. Just remember, all suggestions are valid, just not all workable for EVERYONE. Name calling does no good for ANYONE. Just MY opinion, and you may not agree.
